One big tip to make line dancing easy!

So, you've taken the plunge and come to your first line dance class. You are loving the relaxed feel and you've mastered your first grapevine (Yesssss! Well done!) But you sometimes find you've "got onto the wrong foot" and you can't seem to ... "get it". Hmmm! What's going on?

I see this so often with beginner dancers - and this is my advice:

Think about where your weight is!

You'll hear me say things like, "Weight's on left" as I'm teaching you the steps, and you'll also hear me explain, "If your weight's on left, you can't go anywhere on left, you have to use right"...

Try this: Stand with your weight on left and lift your right foot off the floor. Now you can "vine right" easily, can't you? Now, stand with your weight on right, and lift your left foot off the floor. Can you vine right? No. It's just not happening.

If you stand with your weight on both feet - you don't know which one to use next, so you'll automatically want to keep your weight on your dominant foot (whichever one that is)... and use the other one... and that might be where you are going wrong. Certainly, this is what I notice many new dancers doing.

If you master transferring your weight correctly, I promise, line dancing will be so much easier.

A good step to practice this with, is the rumba box:

  1. Weight's on left.

  2. Side, together, forward (weight's on right).

  3. Side, together, back (weight's on left).

(Notice that "together" means to transfer your weight onto that foot.)

Once you have mastered the trick of getting your weight in the right place - you'll find line dancing a breeze.

Don't be afraid to ask - where's my weight supposed to be? - if you're not sure.

Sometimes, I hear people mastering this with a "yes!!!" in class. I love that! It really makes me smile. Few things make me happier than when you're enjoying dancing and grinning back at me...!

Right! Back to enjoying dancing....! See you in class soon!
